Reading
Our long-term aim is to inspire a lifelong love of reading. We believe sharing books develops children’s communication and attention skills. At The Livity School we use the Sounds Write approach to teach phonics to those that have reached this stage in their development.
Our reading approach follows four structured and sequential steps.
Foundation: Listening to and exploring stories including multi-sensory resources. Tuning into voices, musical and environmental sounds.
Pre-readers: Beginning to explore meaningful letters and their sounds using pupil’s individual interests. Alongside enjoying and sharing books.
Sounds Write phonics approach: Learning to blend, segment and manipulate sounds. As well as reading the corresponding texts. Pupils can also use the Sounds Write app to support engagement and independence.
Confident readers: Understand and infer the meaning of a range of increasingly complex texts.

Our approach
Interactive lessons and multi-sensory learning. Class teams develop lessons which include games and practical activities to reinforce learning. We cater to all of the children’s learning needs and strengths using visuals and hands-on activities, appealing to a variety of learning styles.
Confident readers
Some pupils take part in the Accelerated Reader programme which further develops their understanding of texts, vocabulary, reading comprehension and communication skills. The reading programme provides personalised assessment, regular reading practise and targeted support for those needing additional help. By promoting pupil’s autonomy in reading choices, the programme is designed to empower pupils and give them a life-long love of reading.
